A legal procedure by which an individual becomes a national of a certain country, for example United Kingdom is known as Naturalisation.

If you are at least 18 years old and have been granted indefinite leave to remain or have acquired a document certifying permanent residence in the UK, you may be eligible to apply for British citizenship by naturalisation.

There are a couple of obligations that an applicant need to meet to be authorized to naturalise as a British national.

An application for naturalisation as a British national may be made on the foundation of under section 6(2) or 6(1) of the British Nationality Act 1981, five years of legal residence in the United Kingdom or three years (if married to a British national). There are several other obligations which need to be met in order to become a British National. The most difficult part is often the residence obligations, which are as follows:

In any instance, to be eligible for United Kingdom citizenship, you should not have spent over 90 days outside the United Kingdom in the 12 month period proximately prior to the date of your application for British citizenship by naturalisation;
Furthermore, if you are not wedded to a British citizen, you are also required to have not been away from the United Kingdom for over 450 days in the previous five years and you should have attained Indefinite Leave to Remain for a minimum of 12 months before making your application;
If you are wedded to a British national, you are required to have exhausted not more than 270 days outside the United Kingdom in the last three years. You are not obligated to hold Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) for any recommended period but you will be obligated to hold it at the time of application.
Because of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) disease countless individuals who would not typically meet the residence obligations may now hypothetically do so, and it may consequently be the perfect time to prepare an application to naturalize as a British Citizen.
