Boris Johnson has hailed the British public after 405,000 people – a group "the size of Coventry" – signed up to support the NHS as volunteers.
The number of eager recruits to the government's "GoodSAM" scheme soared just hours after Matt Hancock called for an "army" of helpers.
It came as Clarence House announced that Prince Charles is self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus and displaying "mild symptoms".
Elsewhere, Sadiq Khan warned that a third of TfL workers are either off sick or self-isolating and that further cuts to the Tube service would be necessary if the situation continues.
