What are the symptoms?
Thyroid cancer often comes quietly without obvious symptoms. When it does show any signs, a lump in the neck is the most common. Sometimes, there may be an abnormal change in voice, including hoarseness. The patients won’t feel any pain unless the thyroid is inflamed and medullary thyroid cancer occurs.

How many types of thyroid cancer are there?
Anaplastic thyroid cancer: ~ 1%
Medullary thyroid cancer: ~ 3%
Follicular and/or Hurthle cell thyroid cancer: ~ 10%
Papillary and/or mixed papillary/follicular thyroid cancer: ~ 85%

How does chemotherapy work for thyroid cancer?
Chemotherapy is a systemic therapy, the drug is brought to all cells intravenously or orally to eliminate cancerous cells. Not all types of thyroid cancer require this treatment, except for anaplastic and medullary thyroid cancer. It is often combined with external beam radiation therapy and is sometimes used for other advanced cancers that no longer respond to other treatments.
