Viable VS Optimal - What Makes YOUR Class|Spec Worth Bringing To Raid?

Quite often I hear how certain class/ spec combos in Classic just are not "Viable" for the raid content, and the more I think about it, I don't believe that's the case.
Also people mention this changes in TBC, but its more you just actually have a reason to bring more specs, rather than them being an actual cause of failure in raid.
