The new Peugeot 208 is one of the most important cars being revealed at the 2019 Geneva motor show. It introduces the latest generation of Peugeot’s venerable ‘two-zero’ series cars, and brings pure electric power to an established, mass-market supermini for the first time.
The new 208 has been redesigned from the ground up, with some cleverness under the skin and a posh new interior. It’s a thorough job for a crucial car that Peugeot has to get right: ‘Our strength is the 208,’ said Anne-Lise Richard, low-emission vehicle strategist for Peugeot, ‘we think we can present an answer no matter what the customer is looking for.’
Power comes from either a three-cylinder 1.2-liter turbocharged gasoline engine or a four-cylinder 1.5-liter diesel. The gasoline unit will be offered with 75 horsepower and a five-speed manual, followed by a 100-hp variant with a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic, and a beefier 130-hp configuration exclusively with the auto. The diesel puts out 100 hp and comes only with the do-it-yourself six-speed ‘box.
