Why is Soil Compaction Important?

Why is Soil Compaction Important? Soil compaction is the application of mechanical energy to a soil to rearrange the particles and reduce void ratio.

Purpose of Soil compaction:
- Reduce settlement under working loads
- Increase the shear strength of soils
- Reduce void ratio of the soil making it more difficult for water to flow through to sol (Earth dams retaining walls)
- Prevent the build up of large water pressures that can cause liquefaction during Earthquakes
